Baits work when the goal is colony elimination — foraging workers carry the product back to the queen, ending the population at its source. Sprays work when the goal is fast knockdown of what you can see. Use the wrong one and you scatter colonies (ants, roaches) instead of killing them.
Why does this choice matter at all?
Because the two work through completely different biology. A bait is designed to be eaten and shared — a slow-acting food matrix mixed with an active ingredient, delivered in a form the target species will carry home, feed to the queen and offspring, and eliminate the population from the inside. A spray is designed for contact kill — fast on the individuals it touches, no colony effect beyond that. Same active ingredient class, entirely different job.
When does the wrong choice make things worse?
Three big patterns:
- Sprays on trailing ants — ghost, sugar and Argentine ants "bud" under repellent chemical stress; one colony fragments into several. This is the single most common way DIY makes an ant problem larger.
- Foggers on German cockroaches — scatter the breeding population deeper into wall voids and appliance harborage, and can make them wary of bait placed later.
- Contact sprays over active bait stations — kill the foraging workers before they can carry bait home; the bait becomes useless.

Colony pests. Ants: species-matched gel or granular bait placed along the trail chemistry — the workers do the work. German cockroaches: gel bait inside harborage crevices, plus an insect growth regulator to break breeding. Termites: monitoring stations transition to bait when activity is detected, and the colony is eliminated over weeks. Rodents: bait stations in strategic exterior locations (with tamper-resistant housing, safe for kids and pets); indoor rodents are usually better handled by trapping to avoid dead animals in wall voids.
Where do sprays shine?
Fast knockdown and prevention. Exterior barrier treatments around a foundation intercept wandering pests (palmetto bugs, spiders, occasional invaders) before they get inside. Wasp and bee nest removal where safety demands fast action. Yard mosquito treatment — adult knockdown of resting mosquitoes in dense foliage is exactly what sprays do well, paired with larval treatment on standing water. Spider webbing removal during exterior service. The right chemistry is a non-repellent formulation so it doesn't accidentally trigger the budding problem above.
What are the failure modes?
- Bait placement error — bait far from the trail or in the wrong species' preferred food chemistry is ignored.
- Bait rotation neglect — long-term single-product baiting can produce aversion in some species; professional programs rotate.

- Assuming "if some is good, more is better" — either product; the label rate is the correct rate.

Why did my ant bait not work?
Three usual causes: wrong bait for the species (sweet-feeder bait on protein-feeding ants and vice versa), placement not on the actual trail, or a repellent spray applied nearby that kept workers away. Species ID plus placement on the pheromone trail solves it in most cases.
Are indoor rodent baits safe with pets?
Modern rodent bait stations are tamper-resistant and designed for kid- and pet-safe placement, but a rodent that eats bait indoors can still die in a wall void and create odor and secondary-risk problems. For indoor rodents, professional trapping and exclusion is usually the better plan.
How long do baits take to work?
Ants: often noticeable reduction within days, full colony elimination in one to a few weeks. German roaches: population declines steadily over two to four weeks. Termite baiting: weeks to months depending on colony pressure and station uptake. Sprays give faster visible knockdown but no colony work.
