- DIY fire ant mound treatments: kill visible workers but rarely reach the queen 6+ inches below grade
What actually works — the proof
Correct identification changes everything. Fire ants respond to broadcast granular bait. Carpenter ants need a targeted non-repellent inside the harborage void. Ghost, pharaoh and odorous house ants each need a matched gel bait with different sugar-to-protein ratios. Are fire ants worse in East Texas than the rest of Texas?
East Texas has the highest fire ant density in the state — the Piney Woods' warm humid climate, tall grass ranchland and undisturbed soil are ideal. If you've moved here from Houston or the Metroplex, you'll notice more mounds per acre. Yard treatment cadence is quarterly at minimum during April–October.
How do I know if I have carpenter ants vs. just big black ants?
Carpenter ants are large (1/2 inch), black or reddish-black, and have a single, evenly-rounded thorax. If you find piles of what looks like fine sawdust (called frass) near baseboards or window trim — usually mixed with insect body parts — that's carpenter ant activity. Termites make mud tubes; carpenter ants make sawdust piles.
